Authors Meet Critics

Authors meet Critics is a joint initiative of the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (IJURR) and the Studies in Urban and Social Change book series published by Wiley-Blackwell. It aims at establishing a closer link between readership and authors, supporting scholarly debate at an international level with new technologies. In particular, it wants to provide younger scholars with an opportunity to engage in a debate with IJURR and SUSC authors.

Lasting from mid-January 2013 to mid-May 2013, the second edition of Authors Meet Critics foresees nine online seminars of approximately 2 hours each with one (or more) of the leading authors who published relevant contributions in the last few years. During this period the participants will be able to ask questions, make comments and discuss the specific essay published in the Journal or in the book series with the author(s). It is an important opportunity to engage in an international scientific exchange on theoretical and empirical work in the field of urban studies.

Timing and process
The exact timetable will be defined as soon as the teaching commitments of the scholars involved have been determined and the participants selected. A UserID and Password will ensure participants’ access to restricted area domains. A moderator will facilitate the communication flows. Seminars will be open to a maximum number of 20 participants worldwide.


Admission requirements

• PhD candidates or PhDs in the early stages of their career in the fields of social or political sciences, humanities, liberal arts or economics, geography or planning, etc.
• outstanding academic results and/or rich research experience;
• evidence of a good working knowledge of English;
• full internet access;
• Strong motivation to participate in an International online seminar on the issues at stake.

Costs and grants
The costs of participating in “Author meets critics” will be covered by 20 grants provided by IJURR.

Application deadline
The deadline for sending applications is: 17th December 2012. Applicants will be informed about the selection results by e-mail by 7th January 2013. A test will take place a few days before the start. No application forms are required; however a full CV and the names (and e-mail addresses) of two referees must be sent to: Dr. Giovanni Torrisi (giovanni.torrisi@uniurb.it), together with a letter (email) stating the motivation to participate in the initiative (max 1 page).
